Ammonia is eliminated from coke oven gas by washing with water, separating the wash water, cooling the enriched ammonia in several stages, and burning with addition of air to decompose the ammonia into N2 and H2O. The stream of ammonia vapour, which is enriched to give an inflammable concentrate, is fumed at a steam: ammonia ratio of 0.15-0.20:1, and ammonia vapour with a lower concentration and air are introduced in stoichiometric amounts into the stream of hot gas. Combustion of the ammonia is maintained automatically in a combustin chamber by controlling the quantities of highly concentrated ammonia vapour and less concentrated ammonia vapour. Running costs are low, and the apparatus required is relatively small.
|
