Catalyst for the polymerisation of olefins in the form of prepolymer resulting from the prepolymerisation of ethylene by itself or mixed with an alpha olefin containing from 3 to 8 carbon atoms in the presence of a catalyst system consisting of a catalytic component containing titanium, magnesium, chlorine and optionally an electron donor or acceptor, characterised in that its particle size distribution is narrower than the particle size distribution of the catalyst component.
