Sweetening compsn. contains 5 x 10-4-2.0 M concn of a cpd. of formula:- where R is Me, Et, iPr, Pr, or Bu; and an ingestible organic polar liquid solvent or mixture of such liquids or with water; contg. >= 0.15 wt.% of the polar liquid. The compsn. may contain 1-99 wt. % of a polyol (sorbitol) in 1:10 ratio with the dihydrochalcone of hesperitain, and 0.25 - 99% of a sugar (saccharose). Used in food, drinks, dentrifice, chewing gum and mouth wash. The natural sweetness of sugar alcohols and glycerol is increased by mixing with the dihydrochalcones which do not cause decay.
