A closure member 13, Fig. 1, of a pressure vessel, such as a hydraulic cylinder, is secured to a cylinder member 11 by rigid fastening means 28 received in axially-aligned grooves 26, 27, the fastening means having sufficient radial width to radially deflect one or both the members in the assembled position without permanent deformation so that the members are biased towards each other to lock the fastening means in the grooves. During assembly, the fastening means, which is in the form of a ring 28, is first inserted in the groove 27 and then the closure member 13 is urged towards the open end of the cylinder 11 by the piston 17 until the ring drops into the groove 26, the end of the cylinder being sprung radially outwardly by the ring as it slides up an inclined surface on the closure member during this movement. If desired, the closure member may be provided with a counterbore 33, Fig. 3, to enable the closure member instead of the cylinder to deflect. The cylinder head cover 12 may also be assembled in the same way. Alternatively, the closure member may fit as a cap over the end of the cylinder so that the ring 28 is disposed between the external surface of the cylinder and the internal surface of the cap.</p> |
