Overflow consists of a vertical duct with a closure device fitted, which opens automatically as a function of the amount of liquid present in the duct. Pref. the closure device is a return valve, mounted on hooks or hinged, and biassed towards closed position by counter-weight or spring. The variable orifice prevents flooding of tray at high liquid flow rates or spouting at low liquid flow rates.
