A gas contg. sulphur compds. from the combustion of a fuel is purified by washing the gas stream with an aqs. washing soln.contg. ferrie sulphate. The soln. recovered after washing the gas stream is contacted with iron and/or an iron compd. to neutralise the sulphuric acid, and is reoxidised before being re-used for washing.The sulphur dioxide is removed efficiently from the gas by oxidation to sulphur trioxide, which is hydrated by the water present
