PURPOSE:To provide the reader where a jam fault is prevented and the cost is reduced. CONSTITUTION:This reader is provided with an insertion hole 1, a carrying path 6, a read means 10 which is closely brought into contact with a medium 5 to read it, a retaining roll 11 which faces the read means 10 with a gap between them, a moving means 16 which moves at least one of the read means 10 and the retaining roll 11 to bring them into contact with or approximate them to each other, and a discriminating means 20 which discriminates whether the medium 5 should be read or not, and contact or approximation is permitted only when the means 20 discriminates that the medium 5 should be read (1). A removal stopper 7 against which the front end of the inserted medium 5 strikes, a detecting means 26 which detects the front end of the medium 5 just before the stopper 7, a pair of feed rolls 27 which face each other with a gap for passage of the medium 5 between them in the preceding stage of the stopper and can be rotated in contact with each other by forward movement of at east one of them and the read means 10 are provided, and the stopper 7 is removed by detection of the detecting means 26, and read is started after the medium 5 is carried for a prescribed distance. |
