PURPOSE:To provide the liquid crystal display element which has a high apparent numerical aperture, and to provide the small-sized liquid crystal display device which is bright and easy to see by using this liquid crystal display element. CONSTITUTION:The liquid crystal display device consists of a lighting optical system which has a light source emitting light and irradiates a light valve, where an optical image corresponding to a video signal is formed, with the projection light of the light source and the transmission type liquid crystal display element 4 which has liquid crystal 13 charged in the gap between a couple of transparent substrates as light valves and displays image information by the electrooptic effect of the liquid crystal 13; and a microlens array 16 which consists of a gathering of unit lens parts corresponding to the picture elements of the picture element array of the liquid crystal one to one and has the same array as the picture element array of the liquid crystal is formed on the surface of the liquid crystal display element 4, where the luminous flux emitted by the light source is made incident, in contact or integrally with the transparent substrate 11 of a liquid crystal cell 5. |
