An apparatus for cutting fold corners and/or shaping the closure and side flaps of envelope blanks comprises cutter blades co-operating with corresponding anvils and positioned so that two adjacent blanks of a series of blanks arranged in stepped formation may be cut by a single operation of each cutter blade. The cutter blades may be rotatably mounted (as shown) or reciprocably mounted and the anvils may be fixed or comprise rotatable drums. In the embodiment shown the cutter blades 15, 16 merely cut fold corners from the blanks, however in alternative embodiments (Figs. 3 and 4) the cutting edges of the cutter blades (15, 16) are profiled to shape the flaps of the envelope blank. In the embodiment of Fig. 3 (not shown) the closure flaps 7 and 8 of two successive stepped blanks are shaped by rotating cutters (15, 16), the blanks are then caused to change their direction of travel, reassembled in stepped formation and the side flaps 9 and 10 of pairs of successive blanks shaped by rotating cutters (20, 21). In all the embodiments the envelope blanks are severed from a continuous web 2 at a cutting station 17 and then arranged in the stepped formation by feed rolls 11, 12, 13 which rotate at a slower speed than the takeaway rolls 6. |
