The invention relates to a process for collecting trees with the aid of a tree felling machine comprising an upper and a lower gripping tool 3,4 and a cutting device 14 mounted on a frame 2. The machine is made to approach the first tree with both its gripping tools 3,4 open, after which the tree is embraced by the gripping tools closing on it, followed by a cutting action. The machine is then driven to another tree. With each new tree after the first one, the lower gripping tool 4 is opened to receive the new tree while the previously felled tree is held tight only by the upper gripping tool 3. The lower gripping tool 4 is then closed around the tree whilst the new tree is pressed against the outside of the upper gripping tool 3. The upper gripping tool is then opened, and all the trees are held by both gripping tools. During this opening movement of the upper gripping tool 3, each tree after the first one is moved backward, i.e. in the direction away from the new tree relative to the lower gripping tool 4. <IMAGE>
