PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound useful as a raw material for alkylating agents, solvents, agricultural chemicals, pharmaceuticals, etc., by reacting an alcohol with carbon monoxide and oxygen in the presence of nitrobenzene and a catalyst containing copper and a halogen. CONSTITUTION:A carbonic acid ester is produced by reacting an alcohol with carbon monoxide and oxygen in the presence of nitrobenzene and a catalyst containing copper and a halogen at 50-200 deg.C under a carbon monoxide partial pressure of 1-100kg/cm<2>G and an oxygen partial pressure of 0.1-50kg/cm<2>G. The liquid produced by the reaction is distilled or evaporated to remove carbonic acid ester, alcohol and water and the catalyst component recovered as a homogeneous solution in nitrobenzene is recycled and reused. The catalyst can be stabilized by the presence of nitrobenzene to achieve high activity and selectivity in the production of carbonic acid ester. The catalyst is produced by combining cuprous iodide with 1,10-phenanthroline, alpha,alpha'-dipyridyl and imidazole. |
