The counter for counting tracks in an optical magnetic disc comprises: first means for forming quadrature pulse from predetermined tracking error signal, second means for forming quadrature pulse form predetermined on-tracking signal, means for compensating tracking error in the ODF region, direction means for comparing output of the first means with output of the second means and determing moving direction, and generating signal corresponding to outward or inward moving, and a counter for counting tracking error signal when the direction means generates the signal corresponding to outward or inward moving. Thus this invention can improve access time of discs because of compensation tracking error in the ODF region and counting directly tracks.
