A method wherein the average value of the quantizing increments of a quantizer circuit is calculated (21); the resulting average value is compared (21) with a first predetermined threshold value and a second predetermined threshold value which is higher than the first; pictures in a first standard are coded (8, 30) when the average value of the quantizing increment is lower than the first predetermined threshold value; pictures (8, 30) in the first standard are coded while the average value of the quantizing increment is lower than the second predetermined threshold value; pictures (8, 31) in the second standard are coded while the average value of the quantizing increment is higher than the first predetermined threshold value; and the pictures (8, 30) in the first standard are coded while the average value of the quantizing increment is lower than the first predetermined threshold value.
