The quenching capacitor precharging method involves the quenching capacitors (Ck1...Ck6) becoming precharged from two of the three inverter branches by alternate driving of the diagonally opposite facing thyristors (V1...V6). In one embodiment, the load voltage of at least one of the quenching capacitors is monitored. The load current is adjusted in dependence on the load voltage of the one quenching capacitor. ADVANTAGE - Charging of the capacitors is implemented in a shorter time without any additional circuit element expense.
