A metal chromate is used as cathode depolariser in a high energy density cell having a light metal anode and an electrolyte of light metal salt in organic solvent. The positive electrode comprises 1-24 pts.wt. chromate selected from Ag, Cu, Fe, Co, Ni, Hg, Tl, Pb, Bi chromates or their mixtures, 1 pt.wt. graphite and 1-10 wt % binder. The negative electrode is Li, Na, K, Ca, Be, Mg or Al and the organic solvent is tetrahydrofuran, N-nitrosodimethylamine, dimethyl sulphite, propylene carbonate, gamma-butyrolactone, dimethyl carbonate, dimethoxy ethane, acetonitrile, dimethyl formamide and mixtures. Pref. the anode is Li and the electrolyte is lithium perchlorate in tetrahydrofuran. An Li/Ag2CrO4 cell has a high operating voltage of e.g. 2.4 v average, while a Li/PbCrO4 cell has theoretical energy density of 559 w.hr./lb. All cells have good shelf life.
|
