Lightweight sandwich structure mfr. - by fusing thermoplastic core and facing layers together at mating faces while in molten state

In mfr. of lightweight sandwich structure, comprising a core (2) and facing layers (3, 4), both the core (2) and facing layes (3, 4) are thermoplastic and are fused together while in a molten state along the mating surfaces. Plant for mfg. the product comprises at least one heated roll (9) for heating the surface of both the facing layers (3, 4) and the core (2). The sandwich structure consists of at least one facng layer (3, 4) and a core (2) of thermoplastic which can be fused together. Pref. layers (2, 3, 4) be fused together are are heated on both faces before contact. Reinforcing fibres or fabric embedded in thermoplastic may be used as facing layers. USE/ADVANTAGE - The process and appts. mfr. strong, lightweight, multilayer plates. The prod. is easily recycleable and mass prodn. is simple. Properties are as good as those of existing sandwhich structures.
