In i.c. engine exhaust gas cleaning by scrubbing, the scrubbing liq. is a silcone oil such as methyl phenyl polysiloxane or dimethyl polysiloxane. ADVANTAGE - The silicone oil provides excellent retention of soot particles and hydrocarbons, has a high flame pt. of 250 deg. C, a density of 1.03 and a stability of 3000 hrs. at 250 deg C, can be used at -45 to +250 deg. C (so that coolng to only 80-90 deg. C is required and evapn. losses are avoided, cf. use of water) and, at 120 deg. C, has a viscosity similar to that of water. Additionally, the silicone oil is non-toxic, can be disposed of in the same way as used oil and has a life of about 250000km when used in commerical vehicles.
