Determination of the spindle nut and stuffing box friction of fittings with an electrical positioning drive is carried out by (a) applying hydraulic test forces to the spindle (5) outside the pressurised enclosure of the fitting (2); (b) determining, storing and/or displaying the test forces with time as measurement functions Fi = Fi(t); and (c) simultaneously determining, storing and/or displaying, as a measurement function M = M(t), the time-related torque at the input to the fitting during the load testing of the fitting. A measuring system, for carrying the above friction determination process, is also claimed. USE/ADVANTAGE - The process is useful for friction testing of fittings, e.g. pipeline valves, in nuclear power stations. Friction can be determined accurately in the opening and closing directions of the fitting.
