An installation for cleaning soil or rock which has become mixed with organic material or with heavy metal, has a charging hopper (1). The material is broken up by a machine (2) and then transported by a conveyor (3) to a mixing machine (4) where the material is mixed with water supplied through a pipe (5). The washed material is passed through a screen (6) with the smaller particles passing through a second washing process (11) whilst the coarser particles are transported by a conveyor (8) to a combined washing and screening installation (9). The water used for washing is continuously circulated. USE/ADVANTAGE - Decontamination of contaminated soil and rock. The cleaning water is re-used.
