The engine E drives the front wheels Wf directly and the rear wheels Wr via a drive shaft 6 and hydraulic pressure clutches CL, CR which are located in the roar wheel axles 9L, 9R. A pump F, eg a trochoidal or gear pump, is driven by the shaft 6 and has its discharge port connected to the intake ports of further pumps RL, RR which are associated with the rear wheels so that if there is a difference between the amounts of oil discharged from the pump F compared to that from the pumps RL, RR, a hydraulic pressure is applied to the clutches CL, CR which then transmit drive to the rear wheels. The three hydraulic pumps and hydraulic circuit are thus arranged such that the vehicle operates in a four-wheel drive mode only when the vehicle is first starting to travel and when the speed of the vehicle is increased. The vehicle operates in a main driven wheel drive mode when the vehicle is travelling at a constant speed and when the speed of the vehicle is reduced. <IMAGE> |
