A waveform shaping circuit is arranged to have a waveform equalizer (101), an envelope equalizer (102), a slice signal generator (103), and a comparator (104). The waveform equalizer serves to waveform-equalize an optically readout signal (A) for compensating for interference between code bits. The envelope equalizer serves to envelope-equalize the output signal (B) of the waveform equalizer. The envelope-equalized signal (C) is sent from the envelope equalizer to the slice signal generator. The slice signal generator serves to produce a stable slice signal. The outputs of the waveform equalizer and the slice signal generator are applied to the inputs of the comparator.
