NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formula I [R<1> is alkyl, R<4>A- (R<4> is OH, alkoxy, acyloxy, amino group, etc.; A is alkylidene group which may be substituted by CF3); R<2> is alkyl, alkenyl, aryl group, etc.; R<3> is H or carboxyl-protecting group], and its salt. EXAMPLE:2-[(2-Hydroxyethyl)thio]-6-(1-hydroxyethyl)penem-3-carboxylic acid. USE:An antimicrobial effective against a wide variety of pathogenic microorganisms, including Gram-positive bacteria, e.g. Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis, and Gram-negative bacteria, e.g. coli bacillus, dysentery bacillus, pneumobacillus, myxomycetes and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and its intermediate. PROCESS:A phosphorus-ylide compound of formula II (R<6> is alkyl group, etc.; R<7> is alkyl group, etc., R<8> is protective group; Z<+> is trisubstituted phosphonio group) is heated and subjected to deprotection, to give the compound of formula I. |
