PRODUCTION OF 1,1,3,4,4,6-HEXAMETHYLTETRALIN

PURPOSE:To economically obtain the subject compound useful as a synthetic intermediate for musky perfumes in high yield by reacting 3,3-dimethyl-1-butene with 4-isopropenyltoluene in the presence of a solid acid catalyst. CONSTITUTION:3,3-Dimethyl-1-butene is made to react with 4-isopropenyltoluene in the presence of a solid acid catalyst (e.g. a clay catalyst supporting phosphoric acid) in a solvent (e.g. toluene) at 30-150 deg.C to afford the objective compound expressed by the formula. The solid acid catalyst can be obtained by impregnating a carrier, e.g. activated clay or silica with phosphoric acid, sulfuric acid, etc. The reaction is carried out by using the 3,3-dimethyl-1-butene in an amount of 1.0-10mol based on 1mol 4-isopropenyltoluene and the solid acid catalyst in an amount of 0.1-50wt.% based on 1mol 4-isopropenyltoluene.
