The surface protection cover of molten metal in a continuous casting installation provided with moving mould walls (1A, 1B) forming a container for the molten metal (3), has a) an element (5) serving as a surface cover for the molten metal; b) sides of the element (5) shaped to conform with the moving mould walls, and located adjacent these walls; c) walls (7) dipping into the molten metal; d) a horizontal distance (S) which is greater than 3 mm but does not exceed 10 mm. USE/ADVANTAGE - In continuous metal casting plants. It prevents accumulation of slag on boundary regions of the continuous casting.
