Phenols are removed from oils using aliphatic, secondary, tertiary amines or amides, or their mixts. with water, as extraction agents. Pref. di-n-propylamine or di-n-butylamine, or triethylamine can be used as the amine. N,N-Dimethylacetamide can be used as the amide. Mixts. of amine with water in a wt. ratio of 1:0.1-10 can be used as the extraction agent. Extraction is carried out using amine-water mixts. at less than 19 deg.C. The amine-water extract is heated, after removing the oil phase, to a temp. at which the amine extract and water separate. Both phases are removed from one another and the amine phase worked up by distillation. Sepn. of the amine and water phase takes place at 19.5-35 deg.C. USE/ADVANTAGE - Phenols can be recovered from tar oils and used in organic synthesis or as raw materials in the plastics industry. Recovery is possible without the need for additional re-extraction with organic solvent
