Washing agents comprising (a) one or more anionic surface active agents such as alkyl sulphates, alkylbenzene sulphonates and/or alkane sulphonates and (b) an ether carboxylate R-A-(CH2CH2O)nR'COOM where R = 8-22C alkyl or alkenyl, 5-17C alkylphenyl, benzylphenyl, styrene-contg. phenyl or benzyl contg. phenylphenyl, A = O or S, R' = 1-4C alkylene, M = alkali metal and n = 1-30. Examples of suitable cpds. (b) are Na 2-(dodecyloxyoctaethyleneoxy) acetate, Na 3-(octylphenoxyoctaethyleneoxy)-2-methyl propionate, etc. Products have excellent washing power and stability in hard water. They do not contain condensed polyphosphates or nitriloacetates.
