A split hydraulic power transmission of the hydrostatic type, has two variable displacement axial piston units (3,4) that have shafts coupled to a gear transmission (1) that connects the units in a switching unit (WKS). The power supply for the hydrostatic drive is provided by an engine, e.g. diesel engine (2), of a vehicle. Each of the hydrostatic units are controlled by a valve control block (33) with the valves having inputs from an electrostatic controller (62). In operation the hydrostatic units (3,4) can operate in either pump or motor modes depending upon the load conditions. The main valves (51, 53, 56, 60) are cartridge type solenoid actuated valves.
