Prodn. of a colour coat, esp. for colour papttern cards, comprises offset printing a substrate material (1) with a colour coat (6) and applying clear effect lacquer (I) cost(s) (7) contg. effect particles (3). Pref. (I) is applied by printing, pref. offset printing or screen, flexographic or pad printing etc. It is then heated, pref. irradiated with UV light. The effect particles may be added before applying (I) or during the cure phase, pref. by applying flocks or dusting with powder. It may also be formed mechanically, esp. embossed, during cure. The colour coat is tested and corrected if necessary before applying (I). USE/ADVANTAGE - Esp. for making colour pattern cards for metallic or pearl lacquers used on cars. Other effects include rough plaster and rough fibre wallpaper. Gives good results and is simple, economical and suitable for large scale operation.
