A material processing apparatus (10) includes a laser (12) for producing a laser beam (14) for machining material. During operation, an electrical current I and magnetic field B are passed through the melted material in the machining region thereof so as to produce an electromagnetic force F which acts to expel melted material from the machining region. This apparatus avoids having to use expensive gas assisted expulsion techniques.
