The mechanism comprises a crane, from whose jib a stretcher on which the patient lies is suspended via a spreader beam. A link(50) derricks on the crane column on an axis parallel to that of the jib(30). Coupling devices on the free end of the link engage with mating ones on the nearest side of the stretcher, and from which they are detachable, forming a hinge between link and stretcher. The link can have two arms rigidly joined together by a tube, in whose ends bolts slide axially and are lockable. These engage in eyes on the stretcher. ADVANTAGE - The stretcher cannot swing or tilt, and fewer staff are needed, e.g. when transferring to and from an operating table.
