The method is used in clinical cardiology for patients placed on antiarrhythmic therapy with [butyl-2]diethylamino-2 ethoxy[4-diiodo-3'5' benzoyl] benzofuran hydrochloride (Cordarone). This method is objective, accurate, and ensures that optimum dosage of the preparation is determined in a timely manner, as well as early identification of any complications that may have started to occur. The concentration of r-triiodothyronine [rT3] is periodically determined radiologically prior to start of treatment, on days 10-15 of treatment, on days 28-30 of treatment, and every 30-60 days thereafter, until the p-triiodothyronine reaches a value higher than 0.65 but less than or equal to 1.02 nmol/L, and the patient is then put on a maintenance dose that leads to a value lower than 0.65 nmol/L. Administration of the medication continues at the reached dose ; if, however, the value exceeds 1.02 nmol/L, or if complications occur involving symptoms of hyperthyroidism, treatment will be stopped.
