[Also in Division C3] Paper is coated with a composition comprising pigment, e.g. clay, and as binder a blend of a latex of a copolymer which is non-alkalisoluble and a latex of an alkali-soluble copolymer which is either a copolymer of a major proportion of vinyl acetate and a minor proportion of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid with or without one or more other monomers, or a copolymer of butadiene, an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid in an amount of at least 10% by weight of the polymer, and at least one other monomer. In the examples the binder is a mixture of a butadiene-styrene-methacrylic acid (45%)- fumaric acid (2%) copolymer with either a butadiene-styrene-itaconic acid (3%) or butadiene-methyl methacrylate-itaconic acid (3.5%) copolymer, or a mixture of vinyl acetatecrotonic acid copolymer and butadiene-styrene-fumaric acid (2%) copolymer. The compositions may be applied by air knife.</p> |
