PURPOSE:To provide the liquid crystal display element of a high-grade display which is improved in visual angle characteristic and has excellent visibility. CONSTITUTION:A pair of optically anisotropic elements 11, 12, 13 consisting of three sets are arranged between a first substrate 15a and polarizing plate 10 of a TN type liquid crystal cell 15 having a liquid crystal layer of nearly 90 deg. twist angle. The optically anisotropic elements 11 to 13 are so set that the retardation values of the same set are nearly equal and the retardation values of the different sets vary. Further, these elements are so arranged that the optical axis directions of the optically anisotropic elements of the same set intersect nearly orthogonally with each other. The optically anisotropic elements are so that the optical axis directions of the optically anisotropic elements on the liquid crystal cell side of the respective sets nearly coincide with the bearings of 15 deg., 45 deg. and 75 deg. from the side nearer the first substrate on the basis of the orientation direction of the first substrate 15a of the liquid crystal cell. |
