Magnesium alloy exhibiting high mechanical characteristics in a wide temperature region above the ambient temperature, and process for its preparation. The alloy is characterised by its composition, comprising yttrium, lanthanides and optionally zirconium, by its micrographic structure, size of grains and of the precipitates and by its mechanical characteristics when hot. The process of preparation includes three stages: production from the components, rapid solidification in the form of fine powder and consolidation in the form of rods, sections or pieces. This alloy finds its application for mechanical components working at a temperature higher than the ambient. <IMAGE>
