PURPOSE:To easily and smoothly perform the setting and the adjustment of the contrast of an intereference image. CONSTITUTION:This microscope is provided with a light source emitting coherent light and a polarization variable element changing the phase difference of (x) polarization and (y) polarization of the light. In a differential interference microscope, the light from the light source is separated to the (x) polarization and the (y) polarization by a Wollaston prism 2, allowed to pass a sample 5, and synthesized by a Wollaston prism 7. In a phase difference microscope, only the (x) polarization and the (y) polarization of transmitted light and diffracted light separated on the sample 5 are transmitted by an objective lens 6 and a polarizing plate 8. Then, the interference image is formed on a CCD 9 by the polarizing plate 8. The polarization variable element 18 is controlled by a polarization controller 28 to change the polarized state of the light, thereby changing the brightness of the image.
