PURPOSE:To provide a compact electronic camera with small power consumption and with a simple mechanism requiring no mechanical, linkage between a lens end a viewfinder by reading out partly the photodetecting area of an image pickup element in response to the magnification of the viewfinder. CONSTITUTION:A photographer 11 observes a subject 10 through a zoom finder 3 anal operates a zoom lever 8 to obtain a desired photographing magnification. When the lever 8 is turned to the left and the right, the switches SW1, and SW2 are turned on and a single member 38 of the optical system of the finder 3 moves. Thus, the image of the subject 10 is magnified or reduced within a fixed viewfield frame and the magnification is increased or reduced. When the photographer pushes 8 release button, the distance from the subject 10 is measured by a distance measuring device 7. Then, a single part 2b of the optical, system of a zoom lens 2 is driven based on the measured distance, and the image of the subject 10 is focused on an image pickup element 4. The image projected on the element 4 undergoes the photoelectric transformation through a controller 5. Then, the image of the subject 10 is inputted to an image memory 9 and recorded on a recording medium 6.
