The device comprises a combustion chamber (10) of circular or polygonal cross-section which is closed at both its ends by impermeable covers (14, 16). A catalytic panel (54) of corresponding cross-section is mounted in the combustion chamber and is equipped with at least one feed pipe (56) with axial distribution of a gaseous fuel. The chamber is also equipped over part of its circumference with a number of heat exchange tubes (22), feed means (28) for the forced circulation of the fluid to be heated, suction means (46) for the oxidant air communicating with three tubes (42, 48, 50) arranged axially in the said combustion chamber parallel to its longitudinal axis, each tube being equipped with a large number of holes (52) capable of directing jets of air against the external surface of the catalytic panel (54). <IMAGE>
