PURPOSE:To provide the polarized light illumination optical system which supplies linearly polarized light to the liquid crystal light valve of a liquid crystal projector with high illumination efficiency. CONSTITUTION:An S-polarized light split by a polarized light splitting prism 1 is made incident on the polarized light splitting prism 1 again by a rectangular prism 2, a 1/2 wavelength plate 3 is provided between the polarized light splitting prism 1 and rectangular prism 2, and a deflecting prism which makes the direction of P-polarized light projected from the polarized light splitting prism 1 and the direction of P polarized light passed through the 1/2 wavelength plate 3 parallel to each other is provided adjacently to the polarized light splitting prism 1. |
