PURPOSE:To easily distribute loads without sacrificing performance even in a large-scale distributed filing system for which directory contents are frequently rewritten. CONSTITUTION:Computers 11a-11d for preserving information on the respective directories (/, usr, bin, tmp, xxx, yyy, and zzz) of a hierarchical directory structure are determined by directory names and distributed and stored in storage means 12a-12d of the respective computers. When a computer 11e or 11f retrieves or alters specific directory information, the computer holding the directory information is identified and a request for retrieving and operating the directory information is issued, so that the computer receiving the request responds. In this case, the directory information is decomposed, and decentralized and stored in the respective computer independly to the hierarchical directory structure, so the loads can be distributed without concentrating directories made by access on directories in one computer, and the performance of the system is not decreased.
