Biological waste and/or compost in trench-like continuous reactors (1) is transferred or conveyed away by a chain scraper conveyor (0) mounted on a carriage (10) for driving forwards and backwards, the carriage being mounted on a car (11) which moves along the reactors. The chain scraper is driven to remove the top layer of the compost and transport it upwards on the upper strand of the conveyor.
