Process for the prodn. of positive colour imaging from negative colour separation films comprises: (a) a reusable photoconductor is charged to a first polarity, (b) the photoconductor is exposed via negative separation film of the first colour, (c) the photoconductor is toned in non-image areas by using a liquid toner of opposite polarity (background toner) to form a background deposit; (d) the background deposit is dried and, optionally charges of opposite polarity are induced on the deposit, (e) the photoconductor and the background deposit are charged to the first polarity, (f) the photoconductor and background deposit are subjected to charges of the opposite polarity such that the charge on the deposit is substantially removed while that on the photoconductor is substantially unaffected, (g) Liquid toner of opposite polarity and of the first colour is applied to the photoconductor to form a colour image in areas free of background toner, (h) the colour image from (g) is transferred to a receptor; (i) the background deposit is removed, and (j) steps (a) to (i) are repeated to form images of subsequent colours.
