The toothed wheel or gear rotates synchronously with the camshaft and is formed with contiguous circumferentially extensive zones of equal arcuate extent. Each zone has a respective tooth and a respective adjacent notch. Certain of the teeth are of lesser arcuate extent than the remaining teeth and the corresponding notches are of greater arcuate extent then the remaining notches. The smaller teeth occupy half the arcuate extent of the respective zone and the larger teeth occupy four-fifths of the arcuate extent of the zone. These proportions provide optimum discrimination during normal operation of the engine using a Hall effect sensor (24) and microrprocessor to detect the various zones as the wheel rotates.
