Disinfection of water in U=bends e.g. in wash-basin outlets - by providing germ-killing zone contg. heating elements, electrolytic cell or UV-light source within U=bend

In a new procedure for disinfecting waer in U-bends, a treatment zone (5) is provided downstream of the water outlet (1) and contains a germ-killing device which effects at least a part of the water (7) in the U-bend (3). Pref. the treatment zone (5) may be within the U-bend itself. The germ-killing device may consist of at least one heating element (8,9) surrounding the U-bend. Two heaters may be used, one adjacent to each of the free surfaces (11,12) of the water. The U-bend is enclosed in an insulating material (13). The heating element are controlled by a thermostat, and if the water level becomes too low, a water level probe admits additional water or switches off the heaters. The germ-killing element may also be a galvanic element, whose electrodes are the U-bend itself and a metal rod extending into the water in the U-bend, and whose electrolyte is the water in the U-bend. the rod and the U-bend are insulated from each other and from earth. USE/ADVANTAGE - Esp. in the outlets from hand basins or in ground gulleys. Effective disinfection of the water in the U-bend is achieved, and the formation of aerosols contg. germs, which may flow back up the drain pipe, can easily be prevented.
