The image obtained is digitised and the faults are classified according to n size classes. The fault classes (F1...Fn) are used for the classification of a non-emulsified output product. These fault classes are compared with fault classes (G1...Gn) obtained using photo carrier material with an emulsion coating. Measurements are carried out at further examples and the values for the weighting factors (M1...Mn) are optimised by the use of multiple regression analysis, for the prognosis of the fault quota (OMEGA) according to the equation: OMICRON = EPSILON i Miopt.Fi. ADVANTAGE - Permits use of on-line monitoring, so that warning operation can be activated. Differentiates between faults in carrier and coating and faults due to contamination, roller alignment and similar can be identified and rectified.
