In order to decode binary signals that contain a convolutional error correction code, the path metrics are transformed from arithmetic- to logic operations. The path with the extreme value is subtracted from all other path metrics. All possible binary states are reproduced in real time and are used for addressing of hypothetical source data channels. From these channels a buffer memory is enabled. Decoded data are read from a buffer corresponding to the address for the extrement path metrics value. At a branching in the trellis network, buffers whose associated path do not survive are overwritten.
