A known device for effecting a modification in a stream of transmission cells combines said stream via an OR gate with the modification to be applied. In this way the information contents of empty transmission cells can be modified in a simple manner. If, however, the information contents of a non-empty transmission cell are required to be modified, prior knowledge or a calculation is necessary in order to feed precisely that signal to the OR gate which, in combination with the old information contents, results in the desired new information contents. The device according to the invention uses switch-over means (5), by means of which the information contents to be modified flow off at the same time as the new information contents are fed to the stream, independent of the value of the information contents to be modified. In an embodiment, detection means (4) for detecting a transmission cell to be modified are adapted for effecting a delay in the stream of transmission cells, which makes it possible, for example, even to replace the header of a transmission cell. <IMAGE>
