NEW BACILLUS THURINGIENSIS ISOLATE ACTIVE AGAINST COLEOPTERA AND GEN CONTAINING CODED TOXIN ACTIVE AGAINST COLEOPTERA

PURPOSE: To obtain Bacillus thuringiensis(B.t.) isolate active against Coleoptera and a gene encoding a coleopteran-active toxin. CONSTITUTION: Insect pests of coleopteran insects are brought into contact with an insect controlling effective amount of B.t. PS50C (NRRL B-18,746) or its variant to control the insect pests. B.t. PS50C or its variant, spore or crystal is put in a feed granule or combined with an insecticide carrier (e.g. preferably one containing a food stimulant and an attractant for beetle), embedded in soil or laid on soil to control coleopteran insect pests. A prokaryotic cell (e.g. Enterobacteriaceae or Bacillaceae) or a lower eukaryotic cell (e.g. fungus or Ascomycetes) is transformed with a DNA encoding a B.t. toxin which is producible from B.t. PC50, has about 130 kilodalton molecular weight and is active against coleopteran insect pests to construct an insecticidal composition.
