PURPOSE: To obtain a controlled release composition having excellent sustained release performance by supporting a biologically active substance on a hydrogel of a substance produced by the reaction of an unsaturated cyclic (thio)ether with a hydrophilic polymer having an alkylene oxide residue. CONSTITUTION: This composition contains an active substance such as pharmaceuticals, fungicides, algicides, insecticides and herbicides and a carrier including a hydrogel containing a polymer produced by reacting a polymerizable monomer having an unsaturated cyclic (thio)ether group of the formula (Q is O or S; R1 and R2 are each H, hydrocarbyl or hydrocarbyloxy; R3 is methylene, ethylene or 1,3-propylene) with a hydrophilic homopolymer or copolymer having >=250 equivalent of an alkylene oxide residue. The hydrogel is used especially as a boundary between the damaged outer tissue of human or animal, e.g. epidermic tissue or dermatic tissue and its outer environment. The hydrogel is hydrolyzable in an aqueous medium. |
