PRODUCTION OF PITCH IN HIGH CARBONIZATION YIELD

PURPOSE:To provide a method for producing a pitch useful as a matrix for various carbon materials in an improved carbonization yield by preliminarily shaping a mesophase pitch into a fiber-like product and partially oxidation- polymerizing the fiber-like product. CONSTITUTION:A method for producing a pitch in an improved yield is characterized by melt-spinning a mesophase pitch into a fibrous product by a conventional method and oxidation-polymerizing the fibrous product in the presence of an acidic catalyst and a cross-linking agent in a solvent in a temperature range in which the produced pitch can keep its thermal flowability. The mesophase pitch is preferably shaped into the fibrous pitch having a diameter of <=20mum, and an acidic solvent such as a carboxylic acid is preferably employed as the solvent. The oxidative polymerization is preferably performed at 90-150 deg.C for 0.5-5hr in the presence of 0.00125-0.025 mole of the cross-linking agent and 0.00125-0.025 mole of the acidic catalyst, respectively, per g of the fibrous pitch.
