Localised or patterned irradiation of a continuous target, esp. a synthetic textile mat, is effected using electric or magnetic fields to deflect or interrupt a uniform irradiation beam or curtain. Pref. the mat is carried past an irradiation beam directed between side screens while a series of ferromagnetic (steel) shapes are conveyed at a similar rate past the beam in front of or just behind the mats. Method is used in conventional applications such as selective radiation of a polyamide textile to initiate acrylamide graft polymsn. to obtain a structural mesh texture. The patterns are more readily varied by moving or interchanging individual deflectors than by exchanging complete travelling perforated screens or irradiation gun focus paths.
|
